Elusive Reviews:

Alan Brown of Mistake Theory, Blue Train and The Grand Central Band writes:

The Tones' style is an eclectic mixture of a number of dance styles including house, dub and drum'n'bass with a leaning toward the latter. Some of their music is tinged with a jazz flavour - not surprising, as these guys aren't just DJs - they share some impressive musicianship as well... From the hard-edged tracks like Not Washed Up and my favourite, Kinda Felt through to the 'clubby', understated Summertime, and the jungle/dub Why, this is an impressive debut. If you are into drum'n'bass especially, give this a spin. Highly Recommended.

The Elusive Tones of Wonder, with a name like that Secret Archives of the Vatican just had to check it out. I downloaded the three tracks on offer here and, as I so often am, I was pleased I did.

The Elusive Tones manage to produce in three tracks one great funky piece of breakbeat and two very distinct styles of jazzy drum and bass. This is not a band who are going to be putting out the same track under different names again and again. The tracks are not only suitable for the dancefloor they also contain enough variation to be played happily at home.
BillyG is a great piece of breakbeat with a very interesting choice of vocal samples (that's as much as I'm telling you, you'll just have to listen won't you). The drums are very funky and the slightly jazzy piano riffs (no house banging here) lend nicely to the rhythms. When the scratching starts in earnest towards the end of the track you have to start dancing.

Methane Jungle "The track takes NY style jazz guitar and lays it over some laid back, chillin, drum and bass. The track is really well orchestrated, the guitars run around one another really well and the bass completments them really well. I'd definitely put this as a track for the top. Great to hear really live, intricate bass and guitar playing on a jungle track. Towards the end of the track there's a really dark synth trying to cut through with just builds the tension between the two styles without clashing. This track is a must listen to if you're into interesting and complex music. It's just a track that deserves some recognition.

Kinda Felt, interesting name, dark track. From the opening pads through to the hard breaks its a track with edge. I'm partial to a bit of hard dark jungle and when it's done well like this is it's a pleasure to turn on and chill to it. It takes quite a while to really get going and never really launches into the Metalheadz style of annihilation (touches on it occasionally) that I was waiting for (maybe Moz could get Bomblenger to do a remix of it) but it's a track that lends itself to late night car driving, in a moody kind of way.

Overall I'd definitely have to recommend everyone I know to check out some of these tracks, especially Methane Jungle.
